I'm not interested in whodunit novels because I don't really care about finding out who has done it. They're just works of fiction, after all. The deaths that occur in these novels have no relevance to my everyday life. Who has done it? I have no idea, and honestly, it's not my concern.

Reading novels seems to be considered a sophisticated way of life these days. We're constantly bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information and have to deal with new challenges one after another. While most people are engrossed in their smartphones, having the opportunity to enjoy life at one's own pace is a rare experience. Indulging in a seemingly frivolous activity like reading novels is the epitome of luxury.

However, when it comes to novels, my taste is quite specific. I've tried to broaden my horizons and be more open to genres that I don't typically read, but I find myself unable to finish them due to the annoyance they bring while reading. Recently, I attempted to listen to an audiobook of Sherlock Holmes, but I ended up abandoning it. As usual, I find solace in repeatedly listening to the audiobooks of Paul Auster and Kazuo Ishiguro. My life may seem monotonous, but it brings me comfort. I don't like to read what I don't like to read.

最近、洋書のオーディオブックにはまっているのだけど、偏屈なので、いろんなジャンルに手を伸ばすということができない。シャーロック・ホームズのオーディオブックがおすすめだという情報をネットで見つけて、さっそく聞き始めてみたけれど、そもそも私は推理小説にまったく興味が持てない人間なので、言葉がぜんぜん頭に入ってこなかった。

ウイスキー片手に推理小説を読むみたいな優雅な生活に憧れているけれど、お酒を飲むと胸が痛くなるし、推理小説には興味がない。その上ジャズまで流れていればもう言うことなしだけど、ジャズもそんなに好きじゃないし…。ロバート・グラスパーは好きだけど、そういうのは優雅とは少しちがう気がする。

今回英文で使いたかったのはwhodunitという言葉。who has done it? ということで、つまり、犯人捜しの推理小説のことを指す表現らしい。フーダニット。響きが好きで、前から使いたかった言葉だ。しかしこんな形で使いたくなかったよ。推理小説が好きな人にこそ使ってほしい言葉だ。
